Thanks for the info. The boots never dryed out on the original axles. Had at least 30k miles with the headers. the original axles lasted 155k without a problem with the boots. They just started making noise. Motor and tranny mounts are only 30k old. Rotors and pads are only a couple weeks old. I did not have the problem before the last axle change. I will need to check for loose bolts. Where is the axle pin supposed to be? Thanks again.

I have a 99 leg gt with a borla header. I had both front axles replaced in June. I noticed the other day that the inner boot on the passenger side was open. The guy that did the work replaced the axle no charge. However he mentioned the header could have caused the boot to dry out and open?? My question is, could the header be causing the boot to go away? Has anyone had this problem with headers? Second question, After replaceing the axle, I now notice under WOT that there is a feeling like something does not fit right. Shifter shakes, steering shakes, not right! Has anyone ever had a problem like this? Could the axle be bent? not installed right? Any ideas?? Thanks

I think nipper is asking if you trans has heat shields? Does it happen more in tight turns? -
Here is what I have found. I have a 99 leg gt wagon. The front rotors are causing a shudder in the steering wheel under brake on the highway. I initially thought it was the bracket slide pins because one was seized and the other very stiff. Called Hal's in SC (Subaru yard) and had them send a drivers side bracket. Installed it and it heald the caliper out and about a .25 inch of the pad was off the rotor. i.e. it appered to be from a car with a larger rotor. To solve the problem I called TireRack to check on brembo oem rotors. Asked them to check the diameters of the rotors. For a 99 they found 10.2" on gt and legacy. 10.7" for the outback! (I had not measured mine) Called Hal's back and asked them to double check the year, model and diameter of rotor the original bracket can from. He told me 98 outback and the rotor was 10.7" diameter. So I had them send me the calipers, and the other bracket. Then called back tirerack and ordered the 10.7" brembo oem's. (Also got the stainless lines) I will let you know how it goes when I install. I agree with SubiGal. Its not really that bad of a job. Remove the washer tank, and the air box. I would not pull the valve covers off just to change plugs, but if you need to replace gaskets go for it. I still recommend pulling the washer tank and the air box. Its a hard job when you have to pull the engine to replace the plugs!

I did the head gaskets in my "99 and I replaced the head bolts. I would be surprised if the '98 was any different. Need to replace.
