Check to be sure all electrical plug in connections are good under the hood, also vacuum hoses. Air cleaned might be worth checking too. I had an interrmittend hesitation over the last two weeks. I removed the MAF on Sat. and "Carefully" cleaned it. I used a spray cleaner, (gumout should work) but DID NOT TOUCH. I figured if it was shot it was worth a try. I have not had the problem since. Good luck

You dont say how many miles are on the cars?? Watch out for bad head gaskets in the 2.5L and if its automatic torque bind. Head gaskets look for bubbles blowing in coolent overflow tank when warm and running, also look for oil in over flow tank. If its bad, it will smell like oil/exhaust in the over flow tank. If the head gaskets are bad figure 1200-1500USD to fix. Check for torque bind by making several sharp turns (to lock) at slow speed in parking lot. The car will feel like rear tires want to turn the opposite direction. Another 1200-1400USD to fix if bad. Good luck

Code P0420
MDW25gt replied to rugbyben's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
I get the code PO420 on a monthly basis roughly. I just reset and go. I have a borla header and full Stromung SS exhaust including cat. Gas mpg is 22-25 in town and 28-29 on the highway. Also replaced front and back o2 sensors when I did the exhaust. Dont know if that helps. -
Suggest timing belt water pump and oil pump. I have 23000 miles on mine since replacing with latest and greatest HG. Fresh engine runs very good. I did the whole thing. New short block, rebuilt heads, belts, pumps. (wish I had put in hot cams but could not swallow another $850) Also did clutch. look close at the trans housing snout. Mine had a ridge from where the throw out bearing rode. Lightly sanded to remove the ridge and lubed good. Turn the pressure plate and replace the pilot bearing too. Look at the clutch fork for cracks. That piece can break. Mine does not chatter now. Good luck, Mike

I am interested in hearing from people that have replaced head gaskets. How is the engine doing? I replaced the head gaskets on my 99 legacy GT with 2.5 DOHC it had 127000. It now has 150000 and no problems. I would love to hear everyone say that after the change to latest gasket design there is know issue. Could this be? I love the car too much to get rid of it and also spent too much money to this point. Mike

Dump the dealer and find a good indepandent mechanic. My guess is 80% of you problem is some moron at the Subaru garage. I am on my third Subie. first was an 87 gl 10 traded with 176000 miles and running good. (wish i still had it)2nd was a 90 legacy with 2.2 This was the lemon of the bunch. torque bind, air suspension sold with 145000. 3rd a 99 leg gt wagon. replaced the engine due to head gaskets. but consider this to be my oversight. the problem was there when I bought it. This is a subaru problem! I love my GT. the best car i have owned. with the fresh engine it runs strong. keeping my fingers crossed on the head gaskets.
