EA81 4sp D/R to ?? trans swap

Featured Replies

Ok, I've finally started to get out of the red with my money, and as genuine as double-clutching is, I am sick of it:-\ . So what better to spend it on than a 5sp transmission! Now what I'd like to know, is what is the most reasonable trans to replace it with, and what I need for that swap. I'd like to keep the D/R, but don't really care too much. Thanks much in advance

P.S. I have a 1984 GL Hatchback Diamond Edition with EA81 4sp D/R:burnout:

i know who knows, you need to talk to brat avenger. i believe he did it on his brat. i was talking to him cause i wanted to do it on my hatch.

You could convert to an EA82 5spd D/R. There's an article in the USRM on it. bratsrus1 (Jerry) makes a kit with a modified crossmember that allows you to not need to bang the tunnel, and will modify your shift linkage.

Alternatively, you could go for a 5 spd pushbutton 4WD, or 5 spd FT4WD S/R, or the ever illusive, 5 spd FT4WD D/R (though the low range isn't very low... Kinda crappy really).

You have a lot of choices. Your best choice would probably be the 5 spd D/R from an 85-89 Wagon.

yeah i would definalty go with the Ea82 d/r 5sp.....my cousin (jibs) did the swap on his brat and the thing goes like a champ. road trips are great in it because you can just cruise without revving the hell out of your engine. and i believe it helped his gas milage too....just check in with jerry (bratsRus1) and he should square you away with a kit

Thanks for all the info so far, I appreciate it. I have another couple questions though. How does the FT4wd tranny work? Is it always in 4wd, or is it selectable? And how does the D/R on the FT4wd with D/R work? If anyone is up tonight, I will be too, physics lab report due in about 11 hours, and workin' on the danged ball joints again in about 8.:dead: Hopefully I'll finally be done with that(Broken clamp bolts=huge hassel). Well, enough procrastinating, I'll get back to work on this thing.

Physics is not fun. I've had to take intro level courses in Mechanics and E&M. Not the funnest of classes. I feel your sorrow.

The FT4WD is in 4WD all the time. FT stands for Full Time. Its got an open center differential with a switch to lock it. Kinda nifty I guess. The FT4WD with D/R has an extra lever to put the transmission into a lower range. The low range on it kinda sucks, but it helps.

The largest difficulty I can see with putting an EA82 Turbo tranny in an EA81 is the axles.

Pah! High School physics is easy and fun. Try college physics w/calculus if you want to be confused. At least it was open book.... not that it helped much.

Didn't realize he was taking high school physics  HS Physics was a breeze compared to calculus based Mechanics and EMAG courses in college.

That's what I thought about the FT. I'd probably end up just trying to find a PT4wd D/R 5sp. Thanks for the info!

P.S. This is my second year in this Physics class, as luck would have it, I have the same teacher. Oh well, she's pretty cool. I am hoping that I can keep my study habits improved, so as to pass this class in the higher grades, instead of like last time(*cough* F *cough*).

P.S.#2 Not so easy when you are a lasy(oops, meant lazy) sloth with a hard-rump roast for a teacher

P.S.#3 What about axle ratios? Are they all the same for these years, or would I have to look out for a certain one? I know I have a 3.90(I think, should be same as rear dif, right?)
