How Can I ID a 2.2 engine (interference or not)

Featured Replies

I have a chance to buy a subaru 2.2 engine that has been removed from the car. But not sure if its a 96 or 97.

So how can I tell if its a 96 or 97? I know subaru went to interference for 97.

Thanks for the help!

96 is hydraulic valve lash adjusters, 97 is mechanical valve lash adjusters (Adjustable)

You will have to pull a valve cover to tell

i have heard rumors that they put the vin# on the engines. i recently asked , online, some one who had torn down a 99. the responnse was that they put it on the right side in the back near the trans joint.

i ASSUME this means passenger side, i'm not sure this means 96 97 model years. 96 vin will have an 'T' in it , 97 = 'V' 98 = 'W, 99 = 'X'.

i know 97 & 99 trans have the vin# but they mat not have started doing this until late.

I have had many 2.2's in the past and I have one in a 99 legacy now...the difference I see is the older ones had a valve cover that says 16 valve on it and the plugs were above the valve cover. The 99 has the plugs in the valve cover and the covers are smooth with no writing on them.

Maybe that helps?

good tip on the plugs. makes sense.
