ABS light and wont go into drive

Recommended Posts

My DD called me today from the school parking lot stranded by her 2000 Subaru Outback (again - 2nd time in 2 weeks)). This time it starts and runs fine, but the check engine light and the ABS light are both on and it won't go into Drive. Well, more accurately, it won't come out of park. Shift lever will not move at all. Oh, and the power windows wont work either.

It was a-ok this morning when she left for school. My DH went and checked it out and can't figure it out. Checked fuses and all appear to be OK.

It is extremely cold outside today (single digits) - could something just be frozen?

Sounds like a charge issue. you may have a dying battery or a dying altenator.

There is a sort of easy way to get it out of park, look at the owners manual.

Thanks for your quick response! I searched for other threads on this and found reference to the manual override. My DH is on his way back to the car to see if he can get it out of park.

Thanks again!

Check the voltage. A jump may give it enough boost to activate the solenoid. The cel light is a little odd, but the ABS light is indicative of a charging issue.
