aftermarket stereo with trip computer?

Featured Replies

Hey,

just theorizing; can you put an aftermarket radio into a sube with the trip computer. I'm talking about the post 85 GL 10s.

thanks.

-Jack

I moved the trip computer when I did mine. I mounted it in the little cubby hole below the ashtray(which happens to be the factory mountin place in the 88-89 GL-10)

Here's a link to a pic to illustrate what I did. I used mounting hardware from an 88 GL-10, and had to reroute some of the wiring. Overall, not very difficult.

Yea All the buttons read sideways, i moved mine down to where the ashetray should be since i dont smoke i dont need the ashtray and it seemed a good place to put it.

i found a kit for mine, trip computer stays in teh stock place, and a aftermarket deck fit nicely.. i can take a pics if ya want..

I would like to see that meeky. In mine, a normal DIN sized stereo is too wide to install with the trip computer in place.

And yes, the buttons read sideways.. barely noticable since the print is so small anyway.

i'll get some pics of it this weekend.. if the RX i'm pickin up doesn't have the trip computer in that spot then i'll be partin that out as well..

going to be pullin the stereo out of it this weekend anyways, so will get pics of the "Hole"

will post back here when i get'em..

Crutchfield and others sell two installation kits for our cars. One with a trip computer, one without. The one with the computer looks almost identical to the stock one, but the whole for the stereo is bigger. Only problem is you have to cut out the small support bracket on the far left in the stereo cavity to allow the new stereo to fit. A little extra work and it will almost appear stock, besides the 1" extender bezel course. they have some pics of them on http://www.crutchfield.com .

Hope this helps.:D

yeah, thats the kit i used.. well not from crutchfield but looks the same.. have to cut out the spot for the deck..

i did have to bend the support frame for the dash a little.. just take a small ball peen hammer and bend 1/8" and she fits nicely..
