EA82 MPFI fuel pump, regulator removal (for EJ conversion)

Ok.. I've heard I need to remove the regulator on the MPFI fuel pump I have so it will work with my EJ22.. How do I do this? It doesn't look threaded on.

 

And if it is to hard to remove without lots of modding to fit it back to a fuel hose, can I just take the plug off the dry side of the regulator and somehow cut the spring that is inside it to stopthe regulator doing it's job?

On my ea81T (originally--conv to EJ22) wagon my stock fuel pump has what looks like a regulator right next to the fuel pump. It has a bolt that looks adjustable on it. Tonight I removed that part and put 5/8 EFI rated hose between the pump outlet and the metal line running up to the engine.

My battery on the car is dead (currently charging) but as soon as I can get the car to start and drive I will let you know.

 

The pumps I just got at the junkyard from 85-92 MPFI and turbo cars did not have this part on them. The 86 one had the bigger pump like my ea81T had and the 93 had a smaller pump but again no (regulators) on either one.

Maybe this is a Australian thing with this regulator.. It attches right at the pump and then has a fuel out let hose which connects to the car. The pump came out of a 88(?) MPFI non-turbo Wagon. The regulator on it is right on the output end and has a right angle outlet... Maybe I should get a photo of it tonight to show.

i used the mpfi pump that was already in my car when swapped to ej didn't remove anything.What probs does the regulater cause if left in ?This is the first i have heard of it,i've seen a few conversion and nobody mention it.

I'm assuming it could cause a lack in fuel pressure by the time it gets to the engine.

the SPFI fuel pump in my loyale had what looked like a regulator on it, exactly like you describe. ZERO problems with it (well...except it rusted through and started leaking gas all over the place).

 

and IIRC, the MPFI pump puts out more fuel pressure at normal use on the EA82t than the SPFI one CAN put out

 

anyway, I replaced it with one for a turbo EA82, and it didn't have anything that looked like a regulator on it.

 

either way, they did not require modification. I wouldn't worry about it, unless you guys got something completely different (which, I don't know how it could be that the OZ-spec EA82t would be limited to a substantially lower fuel pressure...and the EJ22 not...).

Yeh it's not a regulator but a fuel damper to even out the pulses from the fuel pumps pumping action. Won't affect your using it..

Still highly recommend getting a brand new pump for your ej swap or any efi conversion tho' seen to many old pumps crap out..

I was wondering about that thing too, I have looked up several on the net as I want to go new pump for reliability sake. Most sites don't have a specific pic of the mpfi ea82 pump, but all the ones I've seen have had the peice on the you are talking about.

bratman, just get a external Bosch fuel pump or something like it. I wouldn't bother getting a EA82 replacement one. I'm only using this one I have because I can't afford a new one right now.

I've thought about the walbro external unit, since i've got the turbo and tmic and various other turbo parts for it now as well. I was looking at those when I first started researching for the swap.
