Howdy everyone, I'm thinking I have a bad o2 sensor. On cold start it will idle up fine and drive great, but once it starts warming up a bit then I get hesitation issues that will lessen once the engine reaches full temp. No codes in the ecu, but I think when normally running the led is supposed to blink with the o2 sensor right? I have no blinking at anytime even when it's fully warmed up. I just want to be sure my Loyale's ecu does the oxygen monitor thing.

A bad O2 sensor 'can' cause problems similar to yours without causing a CEL light. I have had that exact thing happen with my 91 Loyale.

 

There is a code for a bad O2, but you can have problems long before the code shows. I don't remember the code right off hand.

I've got the panel off now and will keep an eye on the led. Funny thing, I drove home from night classes and the car ran perfect and the led was blinking at me......

I had the same problem with my 91 Loyale. The ECU wasn't displaying any error. I was having the same problem with the engine before it got warm. I changed the O2 sensor and that fixed the problem.

Normal operation, steady blink.

 

Trouble code looks like morse code, sort of.

Hey, Quick tip to clean your o2 sensor, Proven and works, if there dirty that is. Take a propane or MAPP torch and heat up that sucker till its cherry red, then let it cool. DONE Clean o2. Oh but for you pyros, dont melt it, then it doesnt work.

An O2 sensor can cause it to do that, too. Next time the light comes on,

you should look up under the dash and get the code off the ECU before you shut off the switch.

 

Code 32 is the Oxygen Sensor (3 longs, 2 shorts)

 

If everything is ok, it will blink 5 shorts and keep repeating. If your car was once an automatic, it will blink 7 shorts instead of 5.

You might try a search on seafoam here. It cleared up the O2 underperformance issues on a 99 Outback that was having issues. I just did the vacuum line bit. Smokes like crazy. I put almost 1k miles on the car - light never came back on. I also had it emissions tested (no plugs, air filter, oil change or anything) and it passed.

 

Can't beat trying it for the price. I really hate removing O2 sensors. I'm starting to use it more and more. If you read the can - it really thinks it's a cure for everything. If you're gonna put it in the fuel tank take along a funnel or an old empty bottle of something else to have it go into the filler neck far enough.

 

My first post here. I've had mixed success in finding solutions to my Subaru problems here. I do service several Sub's(to varying degrees), and sell a few.

I may try that. I've procrastinated on replacing the o2 sensor and have lived with the slight hesitation for now. The weather got crappy again and I have a wheel bearing that is really sounding like a much more urgent repair!

I buy it at a local parts store for under 5.00/can but Advance Auto has it for 7-8 bucks a can. I ran mine thru the brake boost vacuum line (although they recommend something that dispenses it to all cylinders) and it made serious white smoke. It was dark and cold and I was lazy - but it worked well.

 

If you try it let me know how it works for you. It certainly won't fix a truely bad sensor but for the price and effort it is probably worth a try.

Just a warning to those in emmissions states - A bad O2 sensor can cause the catalytic converters to fail. Been there, done that.
