Looking to buy a Brat

Featured Replies

Hey Everyone- I am looking to buy a brat and wanted to get all of your expert opinions on what to offer for this. It has been sitting for a while with a best offer sign. All I know is it is has 189000 miles and it looks to be in decent shape. Anyone know what year it is? I don't know much about Soobs, but I have always liked brats. I looked up an 87 brat on kbb and it was saying about $1300. Any advice on what to look for and maybe some advice on what to offer would be greatly appreciated.

Well that is definately not an 87, 86 and 87 did not come with jump seats in the bed or the side steps. Its gotta be 84-85 range. And be aware one in this shape will bring up to 3 times kbb pricing. Make sure you check everywhere underneath as they are prone to rusting under there if not well taken care of. Good Luck.

edit:: the heatrests are upside down.

edit2:: I don't think its an 83 because the headlight bezels had chrome trim on them right around the lights.

i would say start low, around $1k he just may take it, and thats enough to where it won`t be an insulting offer to most people.

if you do decide to pass on it, please shoot me an email at ruppenduro@yahoo.com if the price is right on the truck, i`ll give you a $50 finders fee.......

I agree its not a 87 or 86 or 85, if 86bratman says not a 83, then its a 84..I see its sitting in front of auto repair shop, my guess they know what they have, and im seeing $3000.00+ .. 1200.00 might just get you the downpayment....

Just out of curiosity, why do you think its not an 85?

Be aware that it has been repainted given that it doesnt have "brat" written on the cab (Could be a good thing, and a very bad one).

I know I've seen many sources saying that the 86 model year the DOT made subaru stop installing them for safety issues, I'll have to look that up again

Here's part of what I found on yahoo's Brat club

...prior to the release date of the 1986 model Subaru Brat

in the United States, the U.S.D.O.T. required Fuji Heavy Industries to delete

the rear facing seats in the bed.

I think it had something to do with reclassifying the vehicle from a car to a truck.

On the insurance card for mine it is classified as a "sport wagon".
