EA 81 A/C installation

Featured Replies

Does anybody know how to equip an ea81 vehicle with A/C? I have some parts cars with working air conditioning and woul like to switch the A/C over to one or two of my nicer ones. I know the cars are set up for dealer installed A/C, but is it a simple bolt in? the compressor and condenser look like no problem, but is there a different style heater core? What, if anything, needs to be changed under the dash? Has anybody done this before? What I'd really like to get my hands on is the dealer instructions, but those can't exist anymore, can they? Any advice on this would be very helpful!

I went through the same process a few months back, but on a RHD vehicle instead of LHD and there are "some" differences.

You'll need the A/C pulley off the crank from your donor, the wiring loom and relays (if fitted) on the left side shock tower (early EA81s don't have the relays), extra thermo-fan (mounts to the right of the standard unit), and I believe half the heater core changes (it does for RHD for sure). Pulling the heater core is a PITA without removing the dash. There will be an extra cable to run into the blower fan circuit (hidden right in the middle of the dash).

I'm sure a few US members will be able to correct any LHD-specific differences...

It's definately going to be easiest to pull the dash. Although it's probably *possible* without doing it, the added effort is worth the end result as you can inspect and clean all the whole vent system and use new foam on all the flapper doors and stuff.
