November 29, 200322 yr Not including the bolt head. And when I did it I used stainless steel so I won't have rust issues later. GD
November 29, 200322 yr Well fellas, will attack the thru bolt today. But will not be able to drive till I get the change rod bushing in next week. Will update then. Thanks everyone for supplying the teck info. Hey ru4x4ever, let us know how it goes too. Glen

December 2, 200322 yr will this fix work on an 89 wagon as well, my shifter is very sloppy when in gear, and I have to swing it way to the right when upshifting (or going for reverse)...usually hitting the person in the passenger seat in the knee when I go for fifth gear! :eh:
December 2, 200322 yr Author Hey got my shifter all finished and it is lke night and day. I thought that it would be a little tighter but it is more solid than my buddys short shift on his little RICE ROCKET. Can not believe it. Thanks everyone for the great info. My exhaust post will be the next project.
December 2, 200322 yr Glad to hear it helped. Heartless, the EA82 shifter is a different design. Your problem is probably bushings. I have a scan of the shifter with the weak points if you are interested

December 4, 200322 yr skip...would most definitly be interested in the info for the EA82 shifter!! it is getting a little ridiculous! Thanks in advance!
September 17, 200421 yr Some similar info on the EA82 5spd shifter would be great. I also have the two common problems, floating around in gear while you are driving, and having to push wide to get 1st and 5th/reverse. 85 Leone - 5spd man/FWD
September 17, 200421 yr Author dfragar, I think the ea82 is some rubber or plastic bushings! Not sure but i think i remember hearing that along the line when i did mine. -Sean
September 17, 200421 yr Hi Skip, Thanks for the fix on my alternator/VR problem! Could you possibly email that "cheesy" drawing of yours to me? It didn't show up on my system, just a square appeared. I would really hate to rely on my own imagination of where and how it should go?! Thanks! Mary
September 17, 200421 yr Mary, I sent you an email including the photo documented article I wrote on the fix. Please reply if it meets your needs comprehensively and is what you were looking for....
September 17, 200421 yr many times the shaft comming out the back of the tranny is fine the problem is that shifter shaft that slides over the tranny shaft. what we usually do if you dont want to replace the shifter is to take the pin out and find a grade 8 bolt that is the same size at the hole in the shaft. usually you will need to press it in and put a lock washer and nut and you will need to tighten it down as tight as you can but it has worked for me many times. good luck.
September 18, 200421 yr Mary, I sent you an email including the photo documented article I wrote on the fix. Please reply if it meets your needs comprehensively and is what you were looking for.... Got it Skip! It's not "cheesy"... very clear... good job! Thought it might be wise to do this before setting the "new" tranny... it's fairly tight now, but as they say, an ounce of prevention? I haven't had much luck finding the bushing and this fix sounds more permanent. I pretty much have to evacuate my passenger to catch reverse on the one I have now! Yikes!
