Removing CV's from shafts (like you do for RWD)

How is this done?? And can you put them back together? I'm wanting to put a good EA81 CV joint on a EA82 shaft. I'm leaving the EA82 DOJ on the shaft, so just wanting to remove the outer CV. In my service manual it says these don't come apart. But I know people have taken them apart for RWD conversions.

 

So whats the deal?

Hold the CV in your left hand by the shaft.

 

Hold a 10lb mini sledge in your right hand.

 

With the tranny side of the CV pointed up, and the knuckle side pointed down, strike down on the cup hard with the sledge.

 

Repeat until the shaft comes apart from the CV cup.

 

 

And no, you wont be able to put it back together :)

Its a whole lot cleaner if the CV boot is missing and youve cleaned all the grease out of the CV Bearings

Basically what he said except with this addition. Clamp the axle into a vise. Use a punch against the inner race. Hammer the inne rrace off of the end of the shaft. It's held by a spring clip in a groove. Once the shaft is out oof the inner race it can be turned until the balls come out and then the outer race.

 

I don't know why he says you can't reassemble, I've done it. It's best to use a new spring clip but it will certainly work.

If you use my method you will break stuff. So, reassembly is not recommended. This is the crude version, i usually do this when im on the trail and broke an axle and have to limp home.

That's how I thought.. But we clamped it in the vice, used a 7lb hammer and hit it with a brass punch on the inner race. We hit it as hard as we could and nothing happend :(

Yeah it usually takes me a good 5 or 6 whacks to get that thing to break loose. Watch your feet, cause when it does go the cup becomes a missle and the ball bearings are projectiles.

 

Keep at it, and i think you'll get better results by hitting the cup itself and not the inner race

Yeah, just trying not to damage it. We hit it a good 30 to 40 times..

It's held by a spring clip. I've never had that hard a time with it. But it is tough. Perhaps a bigger solid punch? The FSM does say it's not servicable but I swear I've had them apart. Once my friends came apart while driving:eek: of course his castle nut had come off, and he'd driven from Californa to Oregon with nothing but the caliper and rotor holding the hub on:eek: . I had to get a new spring clip to reassemble it.

I'll give it another go tomorrow. And if that fails I'll just have to go to the wrecker and pick up a EA82 shaft with joints and all.

I did mine with an angle grinder, cut the shaft close enough to the outer joint so whats left of the shaft wont stop the inner race from rotating inside the joint. Oh crap i skimmed thru your 1st post preddy quick thats not much help to you

you would want to use a heavy enough hammer to have heavy pushing forces rather than quick sharp forces from some puny hammer.

 

it is a spring clip, once you break the tension of the inner race slipping by the rest just pops off.

 

it is cery similar to the spring clip on an axle stub, if you have ever accidentally pulled the stub out with the axle on a transmission this is EXACTLY the way the outer cv is tied together.

 

reassembly you would tap the axle bck thru the race once the balls are assembled and lubed

Well I've never accidentally pulled the stub out, but I've had a coupe of five speeds apart and know the bit your talking about.

 

Any bigger hammer and it will be a sledge.. Just waiting for my brother to get up and then I'll get back down in the shed and see what we can do.

That may be what it tkaes. It isnb't really meant to come apart. I think the accidental one I had was a reman axle. The others I've done(to clean and regrease) did require quite a bit of force to unseat the clip.
