EA-81T Rebuild.

Recommended Posts

l followed your rebuild recently, did you stay with the stock cam?
Yes, I got it reground to standard turbo specs. It is a very good grind if you want to have a good amount of low down torque - mine pulls very well from just over 2000rpm to about 4000rpm. Its still OK after that, but nothing impressive. My crap exhaust wont be helping though....

Oh, something else to factor in, If you are planning on increasing power, plan on adding an oil cooler - I have trouble with mine and its almost completely stock. Im having to run horribly expensive synthetic 10w60 to keep hot pressure up to a resonable level.

Thanks for the info Ross, l had planned on running an oil cooler and l've read Mazda RX-7 ones will do the trick.

I have talked about turning up the boost on my wagon, but have not yet done that. I'm fighting what I beleive to be a clogged radiator and excessivly high oil temps (Above 250*F at times). I really don't feel comfortable adding more stress to the system until these problems are figured out. Besides that, I refuse to turn up boost pressure until I have my intercooler on which requires my hood scoop as well. Soon enough (this summer) I will have all these goodies on the car and will report back how it is etc, but I have WAY TOO MANY PROJECTS to get through before I can work on my baby again.

As for getting more power from heads and cam, the real problem with the EA81 in general is that they only rev to 5.5k rpm!!! When talking to my profs at school, they reccomended new springs and retainers stating that the Al pushrods would be fine as is. I will be satisfied if the engine revs to 7k rpm after this and with a VF-11 or TD04 I can fill in the top end with the turbo power while the stock cam fills in power below that.

it sounds as though you to have looked into this and come up with similar conclusions to me. Yes, the Cam and heads are restrictive but have potential and at a guess l'd say your right about the radiator, mine runs in a constant range of 160-180F on the standard n/a fan set-up and l'd be happier with a little less so am about to replace these with a 12" and 10" thermo, but l am running a new radiator and waic, a must if you want to ring it's neck for more power.

l have seriously considered a complete Sti conversion but decided to put it off for now as l am in the process of moving to another state, next year though, Hmmm.
