i did i quick search, but i just want to make sure this info is correct

 

will a 1995 ej22 engine out of a legacy automatic awd, bolt and plug into a 98 forester automatic? any drilling or swapping of mounts neccessary?

The engine will bolt in. Will it wire up correctly? Probably not. The Forester had an EJ25, not an EJ22.

Pretty sure you're correct Jon, AFAIK the 8 bolt did start until 99 for the ej25 motors.

Yes it will wire right. Many people have done it in outbacks.

Using stock ej25 sensors and wiring, it is as easy as installing another ej25 in its place.

 

In all actuality, probably only slightly harder than my instalation of a my91 ej22 into a my95 obd2 wagon...

actually the ej22 from a 95 legacy was obdII, they started when they changed the body style.

 

Also an odd one that I never new, was the impreza, in 95, the 1.8 were obdI and the 2.2 was obdII. I know this because I have owned both of them.

On top of that, the SVX (EG33) was OBDI in 1995 too. I have one :rolleyes:

This is too odd! (Im doing the same thing except my Forester is a '99 A/T)

 

As far as Ive heard, you should be fine as long as its an OBDII. (I hope for both our sakes)

and normally people find the 95 ej22s because they were still duel ports for the exhaust so everything would bolt up to the ej25 headers. i think somewhere in 96-97 they went to a single port at that point you would have to use single port headers.

I don't think it's going to wire up perfectly if the outgoing engine is a DOHC and the ingoing engine is a SOHC.

 

Also, if your state has emissions/inspections, understand that in some cases, it's illegal to put an older engine into a newer car.

I've done this swap 4 times.

 

If you get an EJ22 with egr everything plugs in. Even without EGR it all plugs in you just get a CEL. If you get one without EGR and you grab the ECU as well it won't have a CEL and will pass inpection in states where all they do is plug in to the car The new ECU won't be looking for an EGR, all the OBD2 monitors will set and the EGR monitor will come up N/A. Obviously it will fail a visual, but if you got an underhood sticker without egr you might be ok there.

 

You can use a 96-98 EJ22 if you get the single port y pipe when you get the engine.

 

The ej25 p/s lines don't line up with the ej22 intake. I just let it go, never had a problem, but if you're picky you can either make a bracket or swap to ej22 lines.

 

Be sure to swap flexplates if it's an auto the EJ22 one is smaller.

 

The only problem I ever had with an EJ25 to EJ22 swap was once I swapped ECU's and the car I got the donor ECU from had some odd emissions maybe california? It had a fuel temp sensor. So I had to swap fuel tank sending units and run a wire to the ECU.

The swap works great. I did it on my 98 Forester. Donor egine was a 95 automatic. The flywheel needs to be transferred from the 2.5 to the 2.2 also. No egr problems if you had an automatic 2.5 in there and the new motor is automatic also.

 

Look at all the other recommeded things to replace while the motor is out, because now is the time when she is out of there. I think if you did a search on HG repair, there is a list out there, like Timing belt, seperator plate, water pump, oil pump seals, plugs, water pump etc....
