September 11, 200718 yr ok so i put this engine together and it wont start. it gets spark and fule and air but still it just kinda chuggs. ughghghg what are some small things that i coulda overlooked:-\ Rob
September 12, 200718 yr Timing belts correct? Distributor timing correct? All the hoses are plugged correctly? You didn't swap the fuel supply with the fuel return? (I did this once...) So many things you unplugged, and so many things you could have forgotten to plug back in.
September 12, 200718 yr Its pretty much gotta be the timing right? The timing or that the compression is so bad it won't start?
September 12, 200718 yr Author i checked everything i know i did the timeing rite im going to check everything again but idk.
September 12, 200718 yr i checked everything i know i did the timeing rite im going to check everything again but idk. If it ran before, then you didn't do something right. Double check everything. If it comes down to it, do a compression test and make sure that engine you put in is capable of running.
September 12, 200718 yr Author well all i have to go on is carfreak said it was a good engine i changed the headgaskit and put it in and it wont start i torqued the heads and all.
September 12, 200718 yr disty in 180 degrees off? I suppose it wouldnt even chug if it was, just crank but not turn over. I didn't tighten my air intake once and it would just start but died as soon as I gave it gas, it was hard to see, stupid mistake and took a while to find. double check your connections like mikeshoup suggested.
September 12, 200718 yr My guess is that the cams are out of phase with the pistons. Go thought the procedure for installing timing belts to make sure that they are lined up correctly.
September 12, 200718 yr +1 on the cam timing.. when i put mine together we had one side 180 degrees off and it did the same thing. really pissed me off too...
September 13, 200718 yr Are you sure you're getting compression? I have a compression tester you can borrow if you'd like..
September 14, 200718 yr Hopefully something because like I said, I really need SubaruGuru to figure it out...
September 14, 200718 yr check the timing belts.. you should be able to correct them, if they're the problem, without having to pop off the crank pulley.. see if they're off and if so, then loosen the tensioner(s) through the holes in the center cover and move the wrong belt(s) around until in the right position. the timing belt procedure is somewhere in here: http://ultimatesubaru.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=44 about 25 posts down is Miles Fox's EA82 timing belt guide .. it's the 4th one down with 5 stars. good luck.
