Recommended Posts

My beast did not come with an owners manual. I was curious can I make my push button 4wd into awd and be able to safely travel at nevada free way speeds (75-80) MPHin 4wd and or awd? Also with this fandangled push button what are some of the do and donts wall driving and using it.

Ie. dont do 30mph and push the button. stuff like that. Any help would be appreciated. THANKS!

*edit* had to refine my post*edit*

You should not ever use the 4WD on paved road. With the exception of when snow ion aid paved road. It is for use in low traction situations, like mud, grave, sand, snow, etc...

Using it on pavement, when all wheels have good grip, stress builds in the drivetrain. The front and rear axles need to rotate slighlty different amounts as the cars makes even small turns. There i no mechanism built for this difference to be allowed.

Unfortunately, it i not easily possible to convert the old tyle 4wd to AWD. Basiclly the easiest way would be to swap in a whole new trans. This involes verifying the correct gear ratio for you're rear end, or changing it to match the new trans. Then unless you want to swap engines at the same time you will need an adapter plate as well, to bolt the newer trans to the older motor.

The good news is that you can shift into 4wd on the fly, no need to stop, or really even slow down. Just put the clutch in, and it's way better if you are going in a straight line.

I was wondering this awhile back, I called a Subaru specialist in the area, He has been doing only subarus for like 25 years in my area. He said I could drive it as fast as my car could go in 4wd. I have the same car that is being talked about. Also. off topic but the reason I run in 4wd is (i have 2 brand new axles, Brand new wheel brgs, the 6 lug conversion was done at a machine shop, 2in body lift, and 27" tires), When In 2wd and on throttle in 1st-3rd I get a HEAVY vibration? Feels like stress on doj? It comes and goes w/ different mods when in 2wd. I started running it in 4wd when driving and if I have to turn tightly or manouver around I put it in 2wd. Any Ideas?

i have driven at highway speeds in 4wd with mny dual range. you can use it in the ran as well. i woud advise using 2wd in rain at slow speeds around town on surface streets(turning involved) but on the highway you will be fine, and you will feel more stability in the steering wheel once engaged.

at highway speeds in the rain nothing is really going to bind because the natural effect of hydroplaning will relieve any binding.

as far as the rest of it goies, the 4wd is just a pto to the rear, there is no transfer case, averything spins the same as it otherwise would in 2wd

Just curious - is that Pacific Import Auto (or am I allowed to mention specific shops here?)?

I have used that shop in the past when I lived in its area and now, 15+ years later, I have been wondering if it is still in business & specializing in Subarus.

Thanks,

Subarule
