December 29, 200718 yr changing sparkplug #4 what a pain in the arse! You got that right, I have been there, done that. I wish Subaru would have made access holes through the inner fender well directly in front of the spark plugs. So, with the front road wheels removed, there would be direct access to the spark plug. My Subies are 98 and 99 models. Maybe Subie has wised up, do the newer models have direct access through the fender wells?
December 30, 200718 yr I wonder how hard it would be to cut the holes. Would a hole saw work with a hi speed drill? Then prime the bare metal to stop rust.
December 30, 200718 yr You guys have the 2.5L DOHC Phase I engine. Changing the spark plugs on this engine are such a pain that Subaru speced the Phase I with platinum plugs and extended the replacement to cycle to 60,000 miles. With the Phase II, the spark plugs were much easier to change, the spark plugs became copper core, and the replacement cycle was scaled back to 30,000 miles. Consider yourself lucky if replacing the spark plugs is your biggest problem with the Phase I.
December 31, 200718 yr I take it you guys haven't changed the sparkplugs on a Beetle? - Scott P.S. And that's every 6,000 miles.
