January 9, 200818 yr How much brake fluid does the hydraulic system (both brake and clutch lines) take. I'll likely be getting some ATE Super Blue fluid and want to flush out the old fluid. The ATE fluid comes in liters only, so will I need more than one tin of it? I'll want some left over when I'm done.
January 10, 200818 yr You could probably get by with one liter, however I don't know how much you'll have left. When flushing, suck out the old fluid from the resevoir with a turkey baster. If you need to "bleed" the system, you may want to get another can just to be safe. One thing to note, you really don't want to leave brake fluid sitting around for too long as it absorbs moisture. Make sure you secure the lid tightly on any remaining fluid to keep moisture out.
January 10, 200818 yr I looked it up in the facotry manual, and it says something like 11.5 cu inches in the resivoir. They dont mention any system capacity at all. Gte yourself 3 small cans. Open as you need them, One may do the job, but you can always return the unsealed cans to the store. I cant see it taking more then two cans, more like 1 and then some. You can roughly guess how much by doing the math, but i think just purchasing more small cans then you need is easier nipper
January 12, 200818 yr Author Well, I just got a hold of some factory manuals for a 2000 Legacy/Outback and it states that the brakes take 16.9 ounces of brake fluid, and the clutch takes 2.4 ounces, so that's a bit less than 20 ounces in total for the whole hydraulic system. I already ordered 2 liters(33.8 ounces per liter) of Até Super Blue fluid, just to be safe, so I guess I'll be awash in brake fluid. Anyway, I just got some DBA slotted rotors for my Sube's front wheels, and ordered a set of PBR/Axxis Ultimate brake pads(I've already got Axxis Ultimates installed on all four brakes, and they're great!) along with the Super Blue fluid, so I should have some powerful, fade free brakes when everything's installed.
January 12, 200818 yr Thanks for the updat and the good info. Sounds like a real nice system did you consider SS braided lines ? Since your changing the fluid, be a great time to do the instal.
January 13, 200818 yr Author did you consider SS braided lines ? Since your changing the fluid, be a great time to do the instal. Hmm, didn't think of it, but it does sound like a good idea! I just checked around on-line and found that Goodridge makes a front and rear set for my Sube; Goodridge seems to be a good, quality brand. Think I'll go for it. Thanks, Skip, for mentioning the SS braided lines! And thanks, Legacy777 and Nipper, for replying, too.
