1600 or 1800 engine, how can you tell ?!

Featured Replies

Simple question. I'm looking for a manual for my 82 4wd GL Wagon, and i am unsure about the size of the engine. :burnout:

Any advice appreciated.

Well, I'm sure there are other ways...But on the heads you should find a casting number, EA71 being a 1600 and EA81 being the 1800. There are probably easier ways though. :)

82 GL 4WD would be an EA81. They didn't put EA71's in the 4WD GL's after 81.

I knew it was an EA81 by the casting, but from this page

it seems there are 2 versions of the EA81. No designation of which vehicle has what though.

I believe the first version of the EA81 was the fat case EA71, but 'm not totally sure about that, but your car being a GL, I'm pretty sure it has the standard EA81 motor.

Big valve/small valve, yeah.

83+ has larger intake valves. They rated them 1 HP higher.

83/84 Auto's and all 85+ have hydro lifters.

That page is poorly layed out, and possibly incorrect on a couple points.

I think you are under the impression that there is a size difference in the EA81's. That is incorrect.

EA81 = 1800cc

EA71 = 1600cc

ALWAYS.

I was indeed under that impression. Thank you for clearing that up.

Oh well if anyone reads this with a DL there is a 1982 1600 FSM on ebay for 10 bucks BIN.

1600 (ea71) have a light blue valve cover, While 1800(ea81) has A more green or sea green color to it. Thats the main way I always tell.
