Wheel bearing center spacer

Featured Replies

Anyone know the dimensions it's supposed to be? I've eaten through a few sets of front wheel bearings. Granted, I abuse the 1992 loyale a lot, but the rate I've been going through them is getting abusive to my wallet. I'm wondering if part of the problem might be a crushed center spacer. That would put too much preload on the bearings and bring about the early death. I think SeaHag1978 had this problem with one of her brats.

Either way, I'll measure it while I replace the bearings tonight, and compare what I get to what it should be.

Unlikely to be crushed, but if your bearings get really bad and start locking up the spacer can wear. Another thing to check is wear of the housing itself from the outer race spinning. I have had this problem before on an ea81 wag. Bearings lasting as little as 10,000km. You should be able to see if the faces of the spacer or housing have been worn.

the bearings are kept apart by the housing itself

The outer race is - the inner race is seperated by the spacer. The inner and outer races need to be aligned obviously - thus his question on the dimention. If the spacer were worn then the inner races would be crushed together and you would have a very high axial load on the bearings.
