96 Legacy engine type?

Featured Replies

Will this have the 2.2 or the 2.5?

Does anyone know. It is not the GT version, just a regular 4 door sedan.

it's most likely a 2.2. Look under the power steering pump and you will see the casting mark of either EJ22 or EJ25. An EJ22 is a 2.2 and an EJ25 is a 2.5.

The GT and LSi were the only model of MY96 Legacy with the 2.5 all the others have the 2.2, you can also check under the hood for a sticker that will tell you engine size.

also, the 96 outback auto had the 2.5L engine.

all of the legacys L, LS, brightons, and the outback w/5spd had the 2.2L.

Does anybody know if I can transplant the 96 2.2 into a 95 legacy easily?

yes, easy.

but you'll need the y-pipe of the exhaust that matches the 'new' engine. one year has dual port exhaust, one year has single port.

what is the 95 legacy - manual or automatic? a 95 manual trans vehicle won't have an EGR set up with it so you'll have to block the EGR stuff off of the 96 2.2.

or, since they are both ej22s, swap intakes. but this would really only be necessary if putting the 95 w/o EGR into a 96.

copy that - the blocks w/o intake manifold will interchange no problem!
