Question: can you lift it with AC..

Featured Replies

Final question on lifting a Brat.

My Brat has working AC. Doesn't look like the engine can be dropped, it looks like the AC compressor will hit the frame rail, area by the jack mount. No I don't want to ditch AC just for a lift. I am KEEPING the AC over a lift.

Anybody confirm?

maybe only do a 2" lift, i wanted a 4"

I had AC in my Mountain Grizzly wagon. it needed to have some custom brackets made to lift the compressor, and get a proper length belt....

but that was 3" lift, and you still have to beat the snot out of the inner fender well area for additional clearance...

I think a 4" lift would be doable, if you can make the right brackets for it....

depending on the size tire you're gonna run, maybe 2" is enough. especially if you don't want to do any fender trimming.....

not mine so i can't tell you that.

that's where you would need a longer belt. it's still in the same alignment as before just farther away. it might just take a little time at the parts store to find the right length belt.

It's not just the compressor/inner fender clearance - the bottom idler v-belt pulley gets right in the way of the lower radiator hose with 4-inch. Best to find an EA81T A/C bracket setup. r/ PK

hence why the photo on the above link has no belt on. I am starting to think that my brat will not get a 4inch lift but instead a 2"....sigh

I know it can be done because Jerry (Bratsrus1) has a 4 inch on his hatchbrat, and he is using his ac compresser for and air compressor, all you need to do is custom mounting brackets and longer belts, and who says you cant put it on the other side of the motor if it will make it easier? anything can be done if you have the motivation

the other side has the air cleaner for the craptachi carb, and most imporantly the BATTERY.

batteries can be moved, and air cleaners can be changed, but most importantly brackets can be made and it can be done, it just depends on how stock you want to keep it. Maybe Jerry will jump in here sometime and help with some pics of his setup, I know it works cuz Ive seen it run in person.

these 2 pics show the clearances stock form.

the lower radiator outlet might interfere once the engine drops the 4" with the guide pulley, and mostly the belt. i think a 2" lift might be more do-able

Make the Bracket so the compressor stays in the exact same place it is or a little higher and more over the alternator, but I know for a fact it can be done, it isnt that difficult, and I have seen the end result in action. Also the guide pully can be moved if the need be, or you could get a water pump pulley with the 2 grooves, I dont recal which cars had them, but some EA81s did and then no need for the guide pulley

yes the AC compressor needs to stay within 1/2" of stock, but, when the crossmember, and engine drop the 4". it lowers the guide pulley (on engine) and it will make the AC belt, attached to the crank pulley, drop so the Belt inteferes with the lower radiator output for the hose.

i have a brand new water pump on now...single pulley style so that would waste the 15.96 i spent (got it on special closeout price) on my water pump.

I think, maybe you might be right, if i Raise up the AC compressor enough to clear the lower radiator outlet, then it might work....with the 4" lift

also, can you tell, i am ANAL when I plan ************ like this. I am anal in the way i keep my cars too (otta see my 91 civic Si hatch with 71,000 miles, it might have less i am guessing)

hey sometimes its good to be thorough, makes it easier. Me I just kinda dive in and make it up as I go along, but it works and I like the end result (usually)

yeah i just don't want to spend xxx on the lift kit and wish i got a 2" instead. trying to put 15" pugs on and NO bashing,/ NO CUTTING anywhere on my pristine car.

well then for that I would go 4 inch for sure. Like I say before, I have seen 4 inch lifted EA81 with the ac compressor, and I know for a proven fact it can be done, so you'll be able to do it

first pic of my other baby for a while..it just shows i want everthing to be perfect...especially on the Brat
