When I was redoing my exhaust, some persons mentioned "Just do straight pipe back to cherry bombs... they count as mufflers, and it shouldn't be too loud."

 

Well, you couldn't be in the car (windows up OR down) for any amount of time without thinking: "Is my hearing damaged?"

 

And then it finally happened: I knew it hung too low... but man... one of the cherry bombs came off while I was driving. Thankfully I was out in podunkland and it was near midnight. So I drove it home.

 

Now, I've got straight pipe with no mufflers, but I've got about 6' of 1 7/8" OD flexible exhaust tubing, and it is WAY quieter. MUCH more backpressure as well. Still sounds like a harley.

 

It actually will fast idle correctly at cold start up, and idles where I want it to, so this is all before the big test drive.

 

I say I still need a cat or two of some sort... a good Y cat would work, but mine is ruined and not worth salvaging.

 

Anyhow, I at once was curious about the flexible exhaust, but, now that I've used it and heard it, I don't think it's all that bad. I also used new flanges and some 90 degree pipes and welded some, and clamped the rest with exhaust putty, ect.

 

Sounds mean, hope it runs good too.

if you had a pipe connectiong the two, you would have completed the recipe, and it would have been bad rump roast. also a stock y pipe back to 1 2incher, would work great too. that flex pipe will only last about 3 months, maybe 6.

Him being in Oregon, he might get six to nine months outta that flex pipe....maybe a little more...they dont use the salt there like we have in MN and WI.

 

But flex pipe will definitly not last nearly as long as solid pipe. Run it while it lasts, Jon, but would be thinking about how you can upgrade it and gather whatever you need before it falls apart on ya.

 

I have a cherry bomb on my 89 GL wagon, and it is a little on the loud side when I get on it and when downshifting (gets that rumble/crackle thing going on downshift ), but normal cruising speed and idle it is barely noticeable, altho i do still have the cat in it, sits right at the junction of the Y pipe.

I've used flex pipe before and would only recommend it in the course of an emergency as they don't last long.

Speaking of cherry bomb exhaust the exhaust on my RX 3- door is rusted in half abut an inch behind the muffler. My next investment for it will be the cherry bomb and some window tint.
