4x4 idea of the day.

Someone should put a 4.44 rear diff in the rear and run 33" tires in the back and have the 3.9 in the front and 29's.

Do that and let me know how it works out.

I think it would look pretty sick on the buggy but i dont have a 4.44 rear diff.

I think this would end in about a minute with one or more of these parts rendered useless: tranny, axles, or drive shaft

Actually if you do the math it should be fine. Cross multiply and divide. Ive seen other custom street and lifted trucks do the same thing.

I just can't see the benifit if you still havelow clearence in the front where its worst anyhow.

Maybe one or two inchs extra in the front and then use the ability the rear DOJ's and no steering get you to crank those shafts.. but I'd just run larger tyres on the rear as well.

I agree there wouldn’t be too much of a benefit. Possibly look like something out of Mad Max and still work in 4x4 would be the perk. I could only imagine the amount of ground clearance back there:headbang: .

You could do this with an open center with no problems.. but then who wants to run an open center.

A local guy here is running a 3.90 OBS 5spd transmission with a 4.44 rear diff. The 5spd has an open center so it wont FUBAR anything and with the different FD ratios he ends up with about a 41f/59r power split. good for pavement.

What is OBS? Could i just put in a switch to go between lock and open if i wanted to?

He's cooking his center VLSD as we speak.

Even if it was an open diff it would still be taking a hell of a beating. Although diffs are made to differentiate they aren't ment to do it all the time. Spider gears will wear then break teeth off. If it is like every other EJ AWD trans I know of then it will have the VLSD and by now its probably cooked and not doing VLSD action anymore.

OBS = Outback Sports I believe

Just put 33x12.50R15 mud tires all around like this.

That is a pic of my project 86 GL wagon with 6" lift and EJ20R engine.
