Ea81 to ea82t

Featured Replies

Hi!

I'm new here. I want to swap an ea82 turbo engine into my ea81 hatch. I have the engine, the transmission and the wires from a turbo wagon. But I want to use the instruments of my old hatch. If anyone can help me and my project, please send me an email (jezypeti@citromail.hu)!

Sorry for my english, I'm from hungary.

welcome to the club

your english is very good, dont worry about that. we wont bother you about it. ive lived in america all my life and still have issues with the english language.

this is acutally the same swap i am planning on with my brat when its done. and i actually have the same question. will the gauges work with the ea82t harness and ecu or will i have to swap out or rewire the gauge cluster?

Most of the guages will work the same. Except for the EA82T being a huge peice of crap, it's actually quite compatible as far as the gauges go. Oil pressure, and coolant temp are really the only two you need to worry about anyway, and both of them are 100% compatible. Just hookup the wires and go.

thanks gd, once again, popping out a valuable nugget of info for us.

and yes, most know the ea82t is a hassle, but i still say that it has more charactor than the ej engines. that and its easierr to work on and parts are cheaper. but you know how i am, tell me its not worth the effort and ill do it anyways. its still fun though to surprise ricers with a 20+ year old car with an under powered 1.8l turbo engine that is as old as the car.

"Character" is something I look for in a car, not an engine.

The dark side is strong with the force - temp you it will :brow:

It's good to know, that not I'm the only, who prefer the ea engine, and thanks the info! At the weekend we will start the wiring.

But it's not so easy to get parts for my car like in other countries of the world. I had to wait for the valves 2 month, and paid about 30 dollars/valve...

This car is very rare in Europe. And get a 6 cylinder engine for it, is nearly impossible. I know only about 10 cars in hungary...

I have the intercooler of an impreza gt, a bigger oilcooler, I think they hinder to crack the cylinderheads into pieces. The cylinderheads are the weakest point of the ea82 engine, they crack all the time between the valveseats.

i already have an ej engine in one of my cars. but you might be right, one day ill put an ej in the brat, just not any time soon. although i might do the swap when i get my rx back, if i get it back. but that will be for my girl since she needs a car and something reliable.

Between the valves isn't the problem. That type of cracking is known, and was addressed by Subaru as unimportant. The problem with them is they crack in the exhaust ports, and leak coolant, and they can't hold head gaskets due to the weak bolt system. Studs are near impossible to find for a reasonable amount of money due to them being a strange metric size.

This has all been addressed - do some searches if you want to know.

If obtaining parts is an issue, you can always throw up a wanted ad in the wanted thread. I am willing to bet some people will not have a problem doing international shipping.
