ey everyone i kno i hardly post problems with my 85' GL but here's a new one. i got home today and i held the ignition in accessories for a few mins and the A/C fan kept running without the A/C being on. i turned the key off and the fan turned off. then to be sure i turned the key back to acc and the fan came back on. can anyone clue me in as to wats going on? i disconnected the power supply to that fan but i left the cooling fan alone. this is in my 85' GL wagon.

EA82's with AC had a clutch fan ran off the water pump.

 

If you have an electric fan then it's not stock.

 

If you have an EA81 (hatch or Brat), then the AC fan relay could be stuck, or.... did you have the defrost turned on? AC comes on with defrost.

The non-AC models have just the electric fan, the AC models have both an electric, and a clutch type.

 

 

Like i told you on the phone, i think its a relay or a switch, either the switch is shorted or the relay is sticking, but either one is a stretch.

The stock AC radiator fan on an EA82 is mechanically driven off the water pump through a viscous clutch. It is not electric.

 

If you have an electric fan, then it was added later. And if that's the case then you are pretty much on your own - you'll have to trace down the wireing and figure it out.

so that clutch is wat u hear when u turn on the A/C den. rite??? correct me if im wrong. please. just to be sure this fan has nothing to do with the engine's cooling system or does it?

The "clutch" fan is driven off of a belt, it is on when the engine is on, there is no way to turn it off.

 

The electric fan is designed to come on when the engine reaches a certain temperature, specifically when it is getting hot and needs the extra cooling.

Just to clarify for you though - there are NO fans in a stock EA82 that are controlled in ANY WAY by the AC system. If you are hearing a fan running after shut-off it means the normal radiator fan was running via the thermo-switch that always controls it. That is perfectly normal.

the fan is designed to run in the acc position, as well as the wipers, too. just turn the car all the way off if you dont want it to run

 

if the fan comes on right away after the car has cooled off (overnite) then the thermo switch may be stuck

 

the thermo switch is located on the bottom corner of the radiator with a blue and yellow wire. ite basically a temp sensor that completes the ground to the fan once it warms up. one wire is hot all the time, the other is ground. the switch completes ground

 

if the fan running annoys you, then you can substitute the thermo switch with a toggle connecting the blue and yellow wires. just dont forget to turn it on when you drive!

 

i always prefer the clutch fan for reliability, you can add one from another car if you like.

I have (well, had) the same problem with my secondary fan.

 

I replaced the sensor for that fan three times, and it still stayed on all of the time, even with the key in the ACC position. I'd say either install a fused toggle switch to the fan, or just deal with it.

 

Me personally... I got a new radiator and the fan wouldnt bolt up so I just run with the clutch fan... She gets hot up hills and under heavy load... One day I'll put in a fan, with a toggle switch.

That is just not true.

 

There is a relay, mounted behind the passenger side strut, near the VAC canister. That relay turns on the electric fan whenever the AC is on.

Either someone hardwired it to the ignition, or one of the 2 things to activate it are stuck.

 

Failed thermoswitch, failed closed(never seen this happen)

 

Or... failed A/C fan relay, failed closed (I have seen realys fail in this way)

 

So, Buddy and Cracker, you guys should test those AC relays on you're passenger strut towers.
