I have sourced a 5spd for my 86 gl. (thanks again 82BratAvenger!!) Now I need to swap it out. I have the place and tools to do it, I want to know if there is anything I *NEED* to do while it is out.

Is it easier to pull the engine and tranny? or just the tranny?

Should I replace the clutch while it is out?

What seals should I replace?

Is there a "how to" thread on this? ( I searched but couldn't find one)

 

 

I have never pulled an engine or transmission before, just trying to be prepared...

I'd say just dropping the trans would be easiest. That way you don't have to mess with other stuff like, fuel lines, wireing etc.

 

Definately plan on replacing the clutch.

 

You'll need to unbolt the lower control arm and sway bar bracket. Pop the roll pins out of the axles and swing them outward. Now you can unbolt the Exhaust, rear driveline, the shifter linkage, and the four engine to trans bellhousing bolts. Unhook the wiring connectors near the top front of the trans. Place a jack under the trans, drop the crossmember, and remove the tranny. Installation is reverse.

Besides the clutch, replace the pressure plate, throwout bearing and pilot bearing (its in the flywheel).

Use jackstands because your going to want it high enough to get the tranny out from under the car (and back in).

Might wanna change the rear main seal on your engine while youre in there.

Make sure you secure the engine somehow. IIRC, it wants to fall forwards after you take the transmission out. It may not with all the fuel lines and other stuff hooked. Just don't want to punch a hole in your radiator.
