Hey just wanted to say that you guys and gals have helped me so much since i've been here, it's like i have my own personal mechanics.....Anyway found a 95 Legacy L wagon for sale with 74k miles, auto. 2.2L, asking $2,500. They said a mechanic told them it needed a transmision mount - costing around $200. They want to sell it as-is. Does this sound like it could be a big problem. What's the worst case scenerio driving it like this, will it just rattle the car? once again thanks for the help!

It will eventually cause you more heartache if you don't fix it or have it fixed.

+1^ it sounds like a good deal to me if that happens to be the ONLY problem.....i would try to get them to knock off the $200 for the mount.....and if you get the mount they are pretty easy to do...even in your driveway......i would get together a list of questions to ask them about recent service...timing belt, head gaskets, rust, anything you can think of....that is a good low mileage car with a great engine but it is 13 years old......

Sorry, they said it needed a transmission mount, not engine mount. I'd be driving it from Baltimore back to Nashville, does that sound kind of risky? I think the price is right, but kind of scared to drive it all that way or do you think it's no big deal. thanks!

like i said i would def. do a very thorough look over the car and make sure everything is ok...and if it is and you can replace the mount i would see no problem not to buy it.....is it and auto or manual trans?

It's an automatic......how do you know if you can replace the mount? Forgive me, i'm not the most mechanically inclined person. what should I look for? thanks!

i have a 96' legacy and they are basically all the same.....all you need is a few simple tools, a jack, jackstands, and a couple hours (if that) (for a novice).....i would suggest buying a haynes book for this car they are very handy ( i did my whole clutch job with that book alone).....

Its simple to replace, BUT check the car for torque bind. Torque bind can tear up the tranny mount.

Agreed. I wonder if an inexperienced (at least on Subaru) mechanic misdiagnosed the symptoms, and "put the cart before the horse". As Nipper said, torque bind can damage the mount, but the mechanic might have assumed any possible binding symptoms were due to a bad mount.

Ok, how to you check for torque bind? Do you turn the wheel all the way to one side and do small circles slowley? If there is torque bind, how bad is that to fix? or does that just the start of many bad things to come and stay away? thanks!
