diff question

Is it possible to change the ring and pinion in the tranny and back diff to 4.11 or 4.44 gears?

the one in the tranny is the problem. this has been brought up several times. its not known for sure if its doable but so far from what i have seen on here in the past its alot of money for machining(the case and the gear shaft plus rehardening) and for the parts themself. i think someone in canada started working on it and had bought brand new gear sets and that was i think a couple of years ago now.

it's been done.....but automatic or manual? into what car? with a 3AT or 4EAT or manual?

not to beat a dead animal but anything is possible with unlimited resources.

an easier route would be to swap in the transmission that you want, including better actual gearing rather than just the final drive.

a board member recently went from 3.7 final drive to 4.44 in his XT6 (6 cylinder engine) and didn't really feel a noticeable improvement and didn't show on the track times either i don't believe. you can search for more on that here or on the subaruxt/forum in case my memory sucks (happens you know!) but might want to make sure it's worth it first?

resources are that I always find 4.11 and 4.44 at the junk yard and I am not afraid of splitting a transmission and just swap a rear

answer to the question it doesnt make you go faster it only helps with your torque curve hill climbs and loss of speed

forgot to mention, the guy i know went from a 3.7 to a 4.44 in an automatic.

You can't go lower than 3.9 in a part time 4x4 EA trans using factory parts. You can with a full-time 4x4 EA trans, though. 4.1 is definitely possible, and from that link Zap provided it sounds as if 4.4 would be as well.

Without cutting, welding and heat treating (expencive) your only options are:

PT4WD D/R box, 3.7 and 3.9

FT4WD D/R box 3.7 and 3.9 (3.9 is using pinion from XT6 4wd box)

EJ AWD D/R 3.7, 3.9 (and 4.11 with 1.44 low range ratio, std Forester D/R box)

with some machining of the crown wheel the EJ AWD D/R can take 4.11 and 4.44 with the EA82 1.59 low range.
