Towing a 93 Impreza??

Featured Replies

I am going to be driving from Nevada to Alaska, and would like some thoughts on towing my 1993 impreza wagon. I know that it can not be towed using a two wheel off the ground dolly, but will a tow bar (4 wheels on the ground) work for the 3000+ mile trip? It would be towed behind a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Any help would be great.

Thanks

IT DEPENDS ON THE TRANS,

manual trans can be towed with all 4 on the ground and the trans in neutral.

auto trans can be towed with all 4 off the ground, or the front 2 off the ground WITH the rear drive shaft disconnected or removed.

don't be too surprised at my intelligence - i'm assuming this is AWD? okay, seriously is it an auto or manual?

if you have access to a tow dolly, particularly if it has brakes, then definitely use it. load the car and disconnect the driveshaft. it's really easy - 4 12mm nuts where the shaft meets the rear diff and you're done. tow it like you stole it!!

owners manual is probably in the glove compartment and will describe towing options in there.

I towed my last project home with a 2 wheel dolly, just pulled the 4 bolts off the rear drive shaft at the diff. Saved a lot of gas over using a trailer...
