K, so I've got an 85 brat with the DR tranny...

 

but here's the thing i can't quite figure out.

 

just cruising around and making regular turns at regular speeds... both 4WD's work perfect.

 

But when i'm parked and i try to engage 4 wheel.... it feels like i have some limited slip diff that has locked up....

 

cause the inner back wheel of the turn will spin out a little bit because its on the inside of the corner.

 

but why does that happen? why doesn't it just smoothly turn like my brothers 93 legacy with full time?

Your Brat has 4wd. When in 4WD its locked front and rear. Your bro's car is AWD and can slip in the middle differential. When you turn your front wheels travel further, go on some soft surface and do a complete turn you'll see the track of your rear wheels is closer to the middle. This means that in 4WD the rear wheels have to slip or "spin" a little to keep up with the front wheels. Going fast you won't feel this and the turns you take at speed aren't so tight. But going slow you do feel the car buck a little and the turns are usually tighter.

the legacy has a center differential. the brat does not. do not use non-differentiated 4WD one dry pavement.

As mentioned, Brat's (all EA81's really) are 4WD.

 

It should also be explained that there are THREE systems out there, not two.

 

1. 4WD. Just like a truck. 50/50 split power transfer. Do not use on hard surfaces as you will get torque bind.

 

2. Full-Time 4WD (FT4WD). Center mechanical differential. Some can be locked - when they are see #1.

 

3. All-Wheel-Drive (AWD). Uses a center viscous coupler. Thus *some* power transfers to all wheels (even when one is in the air), but the coupler allows a certain amount of slip. Automatic versions of AWD can be locked with modification.

 

Your brother's 93 legacy is of the AWD variety - not the FT4WD variety. there is a difference.
