EA81 Y-Pipe Needed

Featured Replies

My '83 DL daily driver developed an exhaust leak on the right side. The y-pipe flange, is cracked about half way around. I am trying to repair it for PA state inspection. Runs really bad with the leak... cyl 1 and 3 spark plugs get fouled real quick.

Where can I find a replacement y pipe?

I called a local Subaru man... for 30 years he's been selling used Soobies. He's nearby in Marietta, PA and he's helped me out lots of times.

BUT he says he could get a $50,000 fine for selling me a used Y-pipe because of the catalytic converter.

Is this true everywhere?

I think it may be federal law. Like the $10,000. fine for messin with the cats.

I know in RI the only way I can get a used cat is to buy the whole car. Can you get the crack welded or brazed? That maybe your best bet to get past inspection.

Best bet is to weld it, but you should also be asking WHY did it crack in the first place? That's not a typical failure point.

I'd guess a motor mount. Yeah, best bet would get to get it welded. If you remove it from the car, carefully, and take it to a shop, they should do if for a half rack of beer.

If you don't have another means of getting the pipe there, call a local exhaust shop.

Or call the Local Subaru guy and ask to buy the y-pipe as scrap metal. Just don't tell him the catalytic converter is worth some money, like $75-$120 (them's got platinum in 'em).
