MPFI NON-Turbo EA82?

Featured Replies

I was wandering about our local scrapyard, and happened across a 1985 GL wagon with an EA82, but it was a MPFI, and NOT a turbo. I hadn't really realized Subaru had done this. Is there any particular advantage to this motor? Certainly they could have advantages for things like fuel distribution and so forth, but would there be any reason to yank this motor out and hoard it for myself because I've come across something desireable (a la EJ22T)?

I saw Grossgary was looking for a head for one recently...what's the story with this motor? I wonder why Subaru dropped this idea for another 5 years till the EJ's came out.

All of the NA 4-cyl XTs came with the NA MPFI motors, and apparently some of the the GL-10-trim cars around 85-86. (I just saw one the other day in out local yard.)

They make a little more power than the other NA engines (but not much) and can get a little better gas mileage (but, again, not much).

mine's into the 40s on the highway!

(does it have a spider intake or the log type?)

More power than the SPFI. Those are rated at 95 HP. Probably a miniscule increase in fuel economy. The 85 2WD GL MPFI was a rare beast and the parts are oddball for it.

ok thanks. yeah, I just saw it and it kinda threw me for a loop...looking for the turbo and all...lol. I didn't catch which manifold it had, I'll take a peek next time I go (right across the freeway from my work). It was an '85 wagon, didn't check if it was 2 or 4WD.

thanks all anyways...

It will be a high-end 2WD GL of some sort - possibly a GL-10.

It has a log-style manifold, and a metal "Subaru MPFI" intake casting.

Just like this one (no - I don't own it - I almost did though):
