ABS sound while stopped, problem?

Featured Replies

I have a 96 OBW 2.2 (from a 98) 5 speed (from an impreza with the different final ratio) with 210k on the chassis, kind of becoming a Frankensteins monster. Recently, shortly after starting, while the car is not even moving yet, with my foot on the brake, it sounds like the ABS is activating (ratcheting sound with slight brake pedal vibration, which then stops). I have no warning lights to otherwise indicate a problem, and the car seems to brake fine during operation, though it has been since last winter that the ABS was tested on ice/snow. Has anyone had this problem before, or know what it is. Is it a problem at all, or just an odd annoyance?

Thanks for your time,

John Eddy

That's normal. I had a MY05 and a MY97 that did/do it. It's a self-checking test that it does after startup. Not sure why you never heard it before although it was more noticeable on the MY95 than it is on the MY97.

Thanks!

how bizarre, mine does that too. i didn't know that, i have just been waiting for the ABS light to finally show up so i could read a code and fix it. guess that explains why the light never came on. my wife's 1997 impreza doesn't ever do that, but my Legacy LSi does.

the ABS seems to work fine on both, what's the difference?

maybe 1 of the systems is the Subaru ABS 5.3 and the other is reg. ABS.....i have no idea the difference.....but ive looked so many parts up for my car and i needed to know what kind of ABS i had....
