rear diff stub shaft socket, what is it and what size?? I got the brocken one off with a 8mm box wrench but the good ones down in a hole, what tool do I need cause I need to go buy one, thanks Scott

IIRC, its an E10, the inverted Torx bit but you need a deep socket and the one that fits I think is a 1/4" drive from Snap-On

1/4" Drive Deep External Torx® Socket E-10

I always used an 8mm deep socket. But use a good quality one and be careful because you can break the socket fairly easily on those.

 

Oops I guess I didn't read it right the first time!

i ended up getting a set of sockets form the parts store that i think were called star sockets. it's like reverse torx bits.

 

my problem that i had was the walls were to thick. so with some grinding then some welding and more grinding and welding i ended up with a socket that was long enough to reach in there and be strong enough to get even the most stubborn ones out. i even did one step farther and welded a lug nut on the back so i hit it lightly with an impact gun if needed.

 

if i make it back out to the shop i'll take a picture of the special subaru tool.

yeah it's ghetto, but it works and i'm only out the few bucks for the socket and some time

there's nothing wrong with making your own tools! I like your 14mm allen wrench a lot.

nope old with old and newer with newer. you can't pull stub axles out and slide some wrx male axles in, or what ever. male style axles has different style of diffs. but the beauty of r160s is they are all interchangeable to a certain level.

 

like i put a mid 80s clutch lsd in a newer 4.44 rear end in a 90 legacy using legacy axles. subarus are a beautiful thing.
