I've been cruising various auto parts places for cheapo clutch kits for my '88 GL10. They all want to know if my car is a vin 4, vin 5, vin 7. I understand they're talking about one of the vin number positions, but can anyone tell me which?

Actually I was mostly talking about which position. I know the VIN contains a bunch of info about configuration of the car. but the sites don't ever mention which position they're talking about.

just out of curiousity why did they need to know that vin #? I have never had that question asked before.

Vin 4 = N/A 2wd

 

Vin 5 = 2wd turbo and all 4wd

 

Vin 7 = Turbo with Airsuspension

 

 

Just always tell them 5 if you have 4wd

 

In the case of the clutch it would be the difference between a smaller 2wd clutch and a larger 4wd one.

Oh okay. I've never bought a clutch for a turbo before that's why I didn't know.

its funny because when they ask that about gen2's they are asking about carb vs. f.i. or 2wd/4wd......

Autozone is the worst place to get subaru parts.

 

Their whole database is screwed up for them.

 

They tried to tell me that 2.2s and 2.5s use the same spark plug wires. LOL

 

And they intermix EA81 and EA82 stuff all the time. Screw autozone. If you have a knechts around, they actually have a pretty good supply of older subaur stuff.

The only place around here that ever gets it right for me is NAPA. Every place else has gotten it wrong. VIP is the worst!

it adds to the fun when you start mixing and matching legos, drop in a 5spd in place of a 4spd, swap to FI, add rear discs, etc. I think it is easier in the long haul to keep my oldies stock.....but sure wish i could put a ej22t in there.

Yeah, I don't like autozone too much but they are the closest thing. The dudes that work there are dumber then a sack of hammers and are stoned more often then not.

 

I just want a clutch to run for awhile before I pull the motor out so I don't want to spend a bunch of bucks on it. If people get parts wrong all the time, what would be the risk of going for this,

Yeah that is for EA81 hatch or Brat. The disc would probably work on a 2wd Ea82.

 

I suppose good deal for anyone that needs a clutch for there EA81.

 

 

Yet another EA81/82 mix up. Subaru didn't help us during the 80's by reffering to all models as either a DL or GL.

 

Didn't matter if it was an XT, a Wagon, or a Hatch, which would all have different engines(just intakes on XT and Wagon) they were all a DL/GL something.

 

 

and to make it worse, both engine types are 1.8 liter and then in the 90's yet another 1.8liter with the EJ18 imprezas.

Hmm.... well, how do you tell the difference then? Spline count? Diameter?

 

Any online places that are reliable for us poor shmoes out in the sticks?

The Chiltons Repair & Tune-Up Guide manuals give all the details of what each # in the VIN stands for. If you have one that covers your year of Sub, look in the front. If you don't have one, go to your library, ask for the Chilton that you want, and copy the pages (they typically won't lend out the reference books).

I actually do have a chiltons, I almost never open it, didn't even think to look in there.
