1992 Loyale overheating problems

Hey guys, I have a 1992 Loyale that I ice race up here in ontario and I was having some problems over the weekend while racing. First thing is it over heated in practice, I later find out the fan is not even turning on so I had wire up a switch for it so I can turn it on or off when ever I want. Afterwards the gauge was still saying it was running hot, heard a few noises coming from the rad. Now the rad is really green on the front, and the fins are real flimsy. The voltmeter on the dash is always reading between 8-12v, but the guy who built the car originally said it has always shown that even though the battery and alternator are good. I have a spare rad and alternator kicking around in case something goes wrong but I think the rad in the car is no good. I am fairly new to subaru's, so I'm not quite sure whats going on with it. Anyone have any ideas?

if your volts are down and it's overheating then check the crank pulley.

 

they are a multi piece unit. it's two concentric metal pieces separated by a very thin piece of rubber, so it *looks* like a solid metal piece but it's not. this rubber can separate and cause both problems you're talking about.

 

the inner part is spinning with the crank, the outer part will spin slower and reduce alternator and water pump output.

 

other than that, if your radiator is green sounds like it's leaking and this should be a very simple fix. replace the radiator or otherwise find the leak.

 

good time to redo the cooling system. replace radiator, thermostat (Subaru only on that), any hoses/clamps that are aged, and the radiator cap.

 

if you're not sure, just fill it up and look for the leak.

Loyales don't have that 2 piece pulley, not from the factory anyhow (MPFI engines only) good guess though

 

I am going to say if it looks like your radiator is leaking and shot, that would explain the overheating.

 

Put the new radiator in.

its only the ribbed belt pulleys , not vbelts ?

hey guys, I was wondering if a legacy rad would fit into this thing. I was told that the legacy rads are 2 core, and last longer and that they would fit. Is this true, and if so are there any modifications needed? I went out and bought a new thermostat, but I read you guys always talking about getting OEM subaru ones. I am wondering why that is? are the cheap ones really that cheap, or the OEM ones just that good?

Legacy radiators are larger, but I don't know off-hand if one would fit. A lot of people spend a bit more on 2 row radiators for their EA82 turbo applications and I would assume that if the legacy radiator was a bolt-in this would be a more common upgrade.

 

If you search around online you can find 2-row replacement's for a decent price. These radiators are small and it's often more to repair one that to just get a new one.
