February 2, 200917 yr Does anyone know where the primary fuel filter is on the '80 GL? All the auto parts stores show a primary and a secondary, the primary is an in-line filter and the secondary is right next to the fuel pump which is on the drivers side firewall. I have searched for a week trying to find this primary filter that they are talking about to no avail. And to make matters worse no one even has the secondary fuel save for the subie dealership we have here, but i wonder how much they may want for one.
February 2, 200917 yr There is just the one by the pump. I'll confirm that in the factory service manual, but I've had 3 1980 subies and I only know of the one.
February 2, 200917 yr fuzzy memory did you look in the typical subaru fuel pump hiding spot, infront of right rear tire?? for the underhood pump, is there 3 hoses, 1 on top and 2 bottom side in v shape? wix http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=33201 or only 2 hoses http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=33089 and if it is truly inline http://www.wixfilters.com/filterlookup/PartDetail.asp?Part=33002
February 2, 200917 yr Author There is just the two hoses. From the gas tank the lines go to the frame by the tire on the right side then go across the body to the left side and actually go into the body and if i followed them correctly are located under the bottom door trim piece. Then they go to the drivers side firewall where they meet the fuel pump and filter.
February 2, 200917 yr yes, just one filter. What body style is your car, I'll send you a scan of the entire fuel system.
February 2, 200917 yr If your '80 is like my '84 Brat, the primary fuel filter is right next to the fuel pump under the car on the driver's side just forward of the rear wheel. The secondary is actually a vapor trap and has three outlet/inlets. It is usually in the engine compartment up near the firewall on the driver's side.

The 1980 models don't have that pump under the car.
