79 EA71 water pump

Featured Replies

I ordered a water pump from NAPA for my 79 brat. The one that came didn't match the one I took off my car. From what I can tell from the pictures on the website, the pump from an EA81 matches it. Does anyone know if the EA81 water pumps work on 79 EA71's?

I'm fairly certain that its a 79 and not a 80+ wide because the starter is at the 12 o'clock on the bell housing.

No, the gen 1 water pumps are different. I think your suspicions are correct, and the 1980+ ea71s look like the same as an ea81, not quite sure if they will actually bolt up, but they won't bolt up to the gen one cases. That is for sure.

You need one that has a round outlet that points towards the rear right? I have several if you want I can send you a known good one, was on a running car three weeks ago. $5 and you pay shipping, but you're in Seattle, probobly won't get to you till the end of the week.

PM me if you want it. or if anyone else wants one, like I said I have I think 6 of them.

The one I got from NAPA is the one with heater core port facing back, the one I took off my Brat has it facing up at a 45 Degree angle. I'm just going to take it in with me when I return the pump I got and see if it matches the ea81 water pump in the store.

this might be a sign of what us 2nd gen Brat owners will see in a few more years. Meaning, parts might be pretty hard to start getting. Better stock up now while they are still available. Won't be long, and no more parts even from rockauto.

That's my thinking, so at some point in the future I'm going to put a EA81 in this thing. They use them in homebuilt aircraft, and after market parts are being made.

So I got the water pump for the 1980 EA71 yesterday, and it is the same as the one on my KNOWN 79 EA71. Between that and my new alternator I can now hear my valve clatter.
