engine noise

Featured Replies

have a 94 impreza and notice a slight gear noise coming from the engine at idle but goes away when reved. should i be worried about this...

How many miles?

Spray the acc drive belt with some water and see if the noise goes away. if it does it can be the alt/ps/idler on that belt.

When was the last time the timing belt was done and what was changed with it?

150k on the car.

not sure on the timing belt. but going to change it this weekend.

sounds a bit different on the left side head than the right in terms of clicking.

Going to adjust the valves this weekend also.

If its unknown, then your going to do the entire timing beltthing:

water pump

cam seals

main seal

idler

tensioner

re-seal the oil pump.

Its quite possible what your hearing may be a tensioner/idler giving up the ghost. Dont drive the car till you get to inspect those parts. If they let go then can do lots of engine damage.

Track the noise down a bit, front of engine, back, trans, sides? Should be able to narrow it down for sure.

Any difference in gear or out of gear?

Ebay has timing belt kits for only $80. Includes the belt and all new pulleys and tensioner. By this time I would guess most, if not all, of your pulleys need replaced anyway.

Now i am hearing a very faint higher pitched screal.

not driving the car till i figure it out.

I can only hear it when i'm driving/ sitting in the the car. when i listen in the engine bay i can't hear it.

Can hear in gear and out of gear, speeds up as rpms climb.

Edited by hebrewhammer

can also be a failing water pump. Take off those timing belt covers and inspect it.
