Anti-freeze MSDS info Question

Featured Replies

just wondering why for example "silicates" or "nitrates" are not included in the MSDS info of some coolants...for example, Zerex has the (older style) green coolant and written on the bottle it states "low silicate formula"..but no mention of silicate in the MSDS...also in the G-05 formula (HOAT) Nitrates have been added..but once again no mention in the MSDS..same goes for the Extended Fina brand..only 2 glycol items listed in the MSDS ..but in there own separate description, mention that some silicate has been added... in all examples no proprietary ingredients are included

The manufacturer is REQUIRED to state the CONTENT (not the AMOUNT, the content - the "materials" in the solution). We even HAVE MSDS sheets for "aluminum blocks" (and the only "hazard" is dropping it on your FOOT )

Woe unto any manufacturer who doesn't supply the hazardous contents (and just about EVERYTHING is considered "hazardous" by the EPA - there is even an MSDS for "distilled water")

just about EVERYTHING is considered "hazardous" by the EPA - there is even an MSDS for "distilled water")

some excerpts:

MSDS for Sucrose (common sugar)

Lab Protective Equip: GOGGLES; LAB COAT; PROPER GLOVES

Ingestion:

Extremely large oral dosages may produce gastrointestinal disturbances.

First Aid Measures

Ingestion:

If large amounts were swallowed, give water to drink and get medical advice.

Accidental Release Measures

Remove all sources of ignition. Ventilate area of leak or spill. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment as specified in Section 8. Spills: Clean up spills in a manner that does not disperse dust into the air. Use non-sparking tools and equipment. Reduce airborne dust and prevent scattering by moistening with water. Pick up spill for recovery or disposal and place in a closed container.

You can usually get the MSDS sheet from the MFg website. They arent always required by law to make it available to you for every "consumer quantity" package, but it should be available for the asking if you call the 800 number.
