Got a 5 speed d/r

Featured Replies

ZERO mile rebuilt. Picked it up a while back (month or two). Can't decide which vehicle to put it in. Mistook it for a Legacy tranny, not too familar(yet). I could put it in the Brat, Weberized, EA82 intake, Cherry Bomb, 25.5" passenger radials on 14" Pug steelies, stock suspension. Or I could put it in the '80 GL wagon, trail rig buildup(in process), 4" lift, 4 speed d/r swap mated to a low mile JDM EA71(that's right, EA71), soon to be Weberized. Haven't got tires yet(haven't drove it for a couple years). The Brat is my usual get around vehicle if I'm not driving the Legacy. The wagon is a (barely) street legal off roader which won't be a daily driver, unless I break down two vehicles at once. I know the 5 speed has lower low range, but the 4 speed is more durable.

Actually the 5 spd dual range is a much stronger tranny than the 4 spd!

what's the final ratio on that? just curious...

3.90 at the diff. I don't know the overall ratio. Seems like I might put it in the wagon. I just need a few more parts and then I can put it back together. Gotta hit PAP. And get a new clutch disc for the fatter input shaft on the 5 speed. Have to use the flywheel that's on the EA71. I think it came out of an EA82 type car in Japan. It came with an EA82 style pitch stop on the bellhousing.

Or maybe the Brat...... Bet I could make it work in the Legacy......

Bet I could make it work in the Legacy......
yep, it's been done before. it's not hard as far as trans swaps go, the layouts of the two vehicles are still very similar so there's no significant size/space/location issues. just have to make the mounts all work and that's not hard to do. then it's just a matter of linkages, driveshaft length, and CV axles, all stuff folks on this board have contended with before.

I know the 5 speed has lower low range, but the 4 speed is more durable.
you're funny, not durable enough for an EA71 but it is for an EJ. guess that's why Subaru doesn't make EA71's any more, they were blowing up too many transmissions!!

I've blown three transmissions with that tiny little thing and a Kevlar clutch. The durability issue must be some misinformation I picked up a few years ago. I don't have actual experience yet.
