Programming remote 2002 OBW

Featured Replies

i did the procedures on cars101.com and the car won't go into programming mode. When it says "turn car On", does it mean between ACC and ON or OFF and On?

I searched, there's tons of earlier Legacy stuff, but found nothing for a 2002 OBW.

It has this comment at the end:

Open/close the door, lock/unlock etc, wait 10 minutes, then try again.

What does that mean? Open/close door (which door), lock/unlock, wait 10 minutes, what?

Okay - owners manual says i need to disarm the security system first.

How do you do that? The owners manual is unclear....except to say "Use the transmitter"...BAH!!!!

i'll start another thread, this is going to get stupid i can see from the owners manual....

I don't have the security system in my '02 OBW, but this procedure worked for me. It did take me a few times to get it right though.

Open driver door.

Push Unlock button on door.

Get in, close door.

Cycle key, lock->on 10 or 11 times.

Should hear 1 honk.

Open and close driver door.

Push a button on the remote, should hear two honks.

Open and close driver door.

Push a button on the second remote, should hear two honks.

Remove key, and you should get 3 honks!

I have no idea why the process is so insane! Good luck!

tried again, nothing. not sure what is going on.

anyone else?

Your cycling the key really fast right? and ending in the lock position... Do you get the horn to honk at all?

WOO HOO! it finally worked! I started to write how I've never gotten a horn honk....then in mid-typing I figured I'd go try it agaaaaaiiiiin. And it worked! Have no idea what I did differently this time.

Thanks evo! The links and tips really helped. The Owners manual has something in it about the brake pedal....apparently just a "safety" recommendation, as I didn't need to do it to program the remote. But I thought it was part of the process at first (though I tried it with and without before).

And it's ambiguous about order/timing a bit.

Now I can order another remote and do this all over again when I get another one!

No Prob. Man..glad you got it working...Yeah i just found that link a few months ago when i joined ClubWRX.net...:)

I'm going to ignite this old post. I got another FOB for this 02 Outback and can not for the life of me get it's horn to make that initial honk that would suggest the car is in program mode. Must have tried it a dozen times. So frustrated....

The key is to follow the instructions to the letter.  As soon as I get sloppy and try to do one from my memory banks it doesn't work.  Glad to hear you have it working.

Yeah it's annoying.  Follow the instructions on cars101.com 100 times and eventually it'll work.  Pay close attention and do exactly what it says.  I've found some of the instructions even slightly ambiguous...but i haven't looked at an 02 in awhile so i don't know if that's one of them.
