February 24, 200917 yr Couldn't believe it and the mechanic was quite surprised that my 84 gl smogged better than average car in CA. *307,000 miles plus * It;s a good thing too since it is my only working car. I have a 99 OB with overheating problems that may be a HG issue. Anyway, I was gonna retire this guy at the end of the month. It's always been reliable. The motor is excellent but everything around it is falling apart, axles, cv joints, lots of irritating small stuff, etc. always changed oil every 3k and really checked things. mostly highway miles so that probably has something to do with this. I love the 84 gls rsd Edited February 24, 200917 yr by roadsubiedog mis spell
February 24, 200917 yr ...gonna retire this guy at the end of the month. ... Why? ... Maybe all those problems can be Fixed in a Pair of Weekends, or So...
February 24, 200917 yr Author Why? ... Maybe all those problems can be Fixed in a Pair of Weekends, or So... Well. I payed the DMV fees so I'm good for another 2 years with this guy.
February 24, 200917 yr All the axle booties, ball joints, bushings and bearings, most easy wear parts are twenty dollar parts and are a 2hr fix if your beer doesn't get in the way. Steering racks, suspension new, engines and trannys, diffs and major parts run $200 to $300 new or low mile. Of course you can get carried away there. Sure some things are $40 like new brake pads or used axles but a low mile motor can get you to 500,000 if all the other parts have been weekended out. Retire the rusty when you hear the tinkle (of rust) when you feel the sway(of the body flexing under your seat when you corner or just get in:lol:)! Just like an old VW Bug!

I have to keep it on the far side of the driveway so my wife does not see it. I bet you know what i mean. I use it to get firewood, go to the beach, and have fun in a snow covered parking lot. I wish i could do this work. all I do is oil changes and real simple stuff. the rest is generally over my head.

February 25, 200917 yr lostinthe202 has it exactly right! I'm down the hill, in Gardnerville. I can show you a few things about cv axles and the irritating small stuff
