Urban Coyote
My brother is going to change the timing belt on my 1998 Legacy L 2.2 wagon this weekend and I was just wondering if you guys had any tips and tricks to keep in mind when he's doing the work? What should I also consider changing while I'm at it? What other parts do you guys consider quite important? Is the really a difference between a genuine Subaru belt and an aftermarket belt? The price certainly is different!!! Thanks! Urban Coyote

idosubaru
get the ebay timing belt kits. you can read all about it on here with some searching. you didn't mention mileage but the pulleys are lacking grease after 10 years usually.
vincentmoy
Just give you some references. I got all my pulleys (2 smooth, 1 teeth), TB, Hyd Tensioner, 2 Cam seals, water pump w/ gasket, Thermostat w/ gasket and PCV valve. All OEM. The total for parts only is a whooping $500. I looked @ some ebay kits and there is a master kit from theimportexpert. It's for 90 - 96. I called them up and they quoted me about $300 for my 98 Imp OBS. Not a bad deal at all. I would throw a OEM timing belt as I HEARD that they have been marking. Your 98 2.2 should be an interference eng so make sure you do it right. If not it could be a few thousand dollars fix:rolleyes:
nipper
Get the belts and seals from subaru, anything else from wherever. What mileage is this change? If this is a 60,000 mile interval then every other change should be water pump cam seals main seal re-seal oil pump idler tensioner A new T-stat wouldnt be a bad idea, and If hes never done it before may want to keep virginal ears away when you try to line up the timing marks. nipper
