March 17, 200917 yr Vehicles: 88 GL wagon disk brakes all around. 87 RX disk brakes all around. I have a leaky front passenger caliper on my RX. Know I know it is probably easier to just rebuild the sucker, but I'd rather just swap out the one from the wagon first being the parts store is over 30 minutes away. Now I got the caliper off the assembly, but I can't figure out how to get the darn cables off for the swap. It's currently hanging down from the car. Do I remove the entire assembly from the caliper, or just release the cable somehow? Thanks in advance for the help.
March 17, 200917 yr Are you talking about the e-brake cable? If so, you need to pull the lever back a little bit so you have some slack and then use a pair of pliers and pull the end off the lever.
March 18, 200917 yr Author Yeah it's the E-brake cable, unless there is another. Yeah I had the e-brake off, and I tried to grab it with a pliers, but it wouldn't budge! I guess I'll just try using more force, or a vice grip to pull it off. I just didn't want to start trying to pull on it harder if that wasn't the way it's supposed to go. Darn Chilton wasn't much help for my year brakes. Seems it skipped that step. Thanks for the replies fellas.
March 18, 200917 yr If the rubber boot is on there try pulling it away from the lever to expose more cable, it helps sometime. good luck
March 18, 200917 yr Author Yeah everything is in good condition, and all the rubber boots are there. I just sprayed some PB blaster on the sucker, and I'll give it a go in the morn. I'll keep everyone posted!! Thanks again for the responses everyone. USMB rocks.
March 18, 200917 yr "Darn Chilton wasn't much help". No kidding, I just did some work on my Jeep and Chilton's had such useful advice as 'if the axle seal is bad, replace it', 'if the axle bearing is excessively worn replace it with a new one' of course, how the frick you're supposed to get the seal and bearing out of the axle housing weren't worth mentioning... and unless you have x-ray vision, it's hard to inspect the bearing without pulling it - and even less likely it'll survive the removal with home tools! Carry on, just had to vent. And aren't those crappy black and white photos useful... ok, done now... really
March 18, 200917 yr Are you pulling on the cable? If so don't... Push the lever to the e-brake on position and then pull the cable while wriggling it and slot it out
March 18, 200917 yr Author I just pushed in the lever, and slid the cable end out. No need to pull on the cable and mess it up. So I got it all done! Works good, and even better after a final bleed. Is there a tool that twists the caliper so ya can compress, or line up to the brake pads? I had to twist it a little bit so the rivet on the outside of the inside brake pad would line through, and allowing for the caliper to slide into place. Other than that, had it done in no time. Ran all the fluid out too!
March 19, 200917 yr Mine normally get stuck in the lever thus need a little pull once the lever is pushed back
