January 19, 200422 yr this was a donation to purple heart,i got it in flint,mi at the car auction.the price of $104.00. I drove it home and went down the road with no problems untill 73 miles later, cough, cough and the car died, i put gas in it before it died on on me and it was like somebody turned the gas off.2 nd problem,i looked the SEARCH FOR THIS and i will look at some things i read. Now the 2 nd problem is that i had no HEAT just cold air, it was 2 degrees that night.any help and hints for the 2 problems because i'll be working on it i hope some time this week. Thanks Bill.
January 19, 200422 yr Check your fuel pump, and your filter. As for problem #2, first check to see if the heater core has been bypassed, not sure if the also check the valve on it, that may be stuck closed, or you could have a broken or didconnected linkage on the controlls. Good Luck
January 19, 200422 yr check to see if a hose leaked, losing coolant. that would explain no heat, maybe it busted a hose, and lost power as it got hot check the coolant level, watch for steam in the exhaust or under the hood
January 19, 200422 yr Bill: #1: The fuel pump and filter are good advice, but it could be stale gas too. The car may have sat for awhile before the auction, and the dirt may have fouled up your fuel system. Get a tank of fresh gas, and some fuel system cleaner, then re-evaluate. #2: Low coolant can make your car run cold, and a leaky head gasket can make your coolant run low. If you top it off, and it dissapears without a trace, it could be going out the tailpipe. Lets hope I'm wrong on this... good luck, John
January 19, 200422 yr i'd check to see if there was a thermostat in it.. being 2 degres outside and not having a thermostat will cause the cold air as well.. as for dieing, check the fuel pump and filter..
January 19, 200422 yr ... if i was damp out as well as cold (like ice fog conditions) the lack of a heat snorkle on the air cleaner can cause carb ice. Both our carb '87s started dieing on us in the; cold and I finally sussed it by thinking about what the symptoms would have meant if I had been flying ... AHA! Carb ice, it was too, a new flex tube on both cars and neither one ever died again.
January 21, 200422 yr Author i got a chance to look at it,wrong alt, water pump belt on it.it's got at least 2 inches of slack,no more travel on the alt. to tight in up it's at the end of the travel on the bracket.i'll replace that first and then go to second step.i hope i get some time soon to work on it.Bill:wave:
January 21, 200422 yr well if thoes alt. belts arent tight enough and its night time (you got your headlights on) your charging system aint gettin enough juice.. The combo off all the electronics running and low voltage may have something to do with the fuel problem. Maybe the pump isnt getting enough fuel And for the carb icing up.. I had it happen this weekend at -50F 1/8th inch of ice in covering the side of the carb. I guess thats what happens when your in 2 feet of powder doin 45 mph jumpin berms Check the vac. actuator off the hot pipe that runs from the exhaust to the air intake.. if that doesnt open, you could have iced up Did you check the linkage on the hot cold arm for the heater? you should be able to hear a difference in air flow from moving it from hot to cold.. if not, something in the linkage could be messed up..
January 23, 200422 yr Author i worked on it today,it does not have the sheild on the cat. conv. that the heat rise tube connects too.so i am thinking that the carb. did ice up too.is any other way that i can hook up the heat rise thing so this wont happen again????? I did put a new alt. belt on it and started working on the exhaust leak,i'll have to check the the heat isue next.Bill.
January 23, 200422 yr well if you dont have the shield, I dont really know how you could hook it up. Goto a JY and pull off that shield and install it.. I think you could get away with just the top half of it. I got a piece of heavy duty exhaust hose (used on salt water cooled Gas engines in fishing boats) Mine is like 2 1/4 inch.. its too big, but the bottom of the hose melted to the shield sealing it so I dont need a hose clamp on it. On the top it goes on the inlet of the air filter assembly thats on the passenger side facing the back of the car What are you using to fix the exhaust leak?
January 24, 200422 yr Author i am working on the flange where it goes to the head,i got a new gasket and it still leaks, looks like the flange is not straight.i'll look at it again this afternoon and see what i come up with.Biil (maybe the FIRE WRENCH will fix it)
February 5, 200422 yr Author Well i got the exchaust leak problem fixed.3 of the 4 flange holes to the head studs where striped,i put new steel threads inserts after i had to drill and tap all 3,now it's fixed.i got the heat problem taken care of also, big mouse nest and the door that lets the air flow go through to the heater core was not working,it was off the pin that makes open and close.now i got lots of heat.before long i'll have it on the road and see what else is wrong with it,i did put new fuel in it and dry gas,it does run much better.
February 6, 200422 yr Glad to hear you have it back on the road..........These really are great cars; I know I couldn't live without mine. I'll have to PM you about radio stuff........
