'78 BRAT with WEBER spit sputter cough pop...

Featured Replies

blasted thing does not want to run right when at part throttle

as in when you let off the gas a little to slow down just a bit or quit going faster

spit sputter cough pop...

seems to be fine while throttle open or closed :banghead:

timing has little effect, but seems better at 20+ than 10

idle mixture set in middle of good range, but has little effect

manual choke off

130 psi compression

valves set correct, fresh tuneup

28 mpg!

maybe it didn't like the long trip :)

what are you running for fuel?

is the fuel filter full? may want to swap back to the original pump?

sure it does :D

50% E85 to try to clean out the system, remember: the ski wagon ran good with this carb on E85

it was also doing this to me with KUM & go and GIT & go gas

even did this with a big vac. leak

filters are fine

don't use ethanol blended fuel in it. Its getting harder and harder to find places to buy it with no E. E is bad on Subaru engines. My manual to the SVX strictly in BIG BOLD LETTERS says do not use fuel that has higher than 10% ethanol, it will destroy the engine. I know for a fact gas stations in Iowa are mixing E in at higher than the 10% rates.

I use premium, and only from Amoco/BP or Phillips/Conoco

I for one will be glad when Ethanol industry goes under and its over.

this isn't a SVX, it doesn't care what it has

will try either a different weber :brow: or a rebuild kit

could also switch back to the hitachis

I concurr with Mcbrat.

It sounds like it may have a semi clogged fuel filter or a weak fuel pump.

Another idea I have is that it may have a leak in the exhaust breather system.

That will cause the pop gurgle BLAM!!! Backfiring and the like.

I should know, my brat has this problem :D

I personally don't mind, I think it makes it sound like a racecar. :-p

But if it is accompanied with a lack of power (HA! an EA engine

lacking power, like that ever happens) I don't know.

cleaned and adjusted float height of HITACHI

so clean it almost looks new!!

have yet to adjust idle and idle mixture

replaced ALL vac. hoses

essentially returned to factory spec

timing still high, almost out of adjustment, but sounds best where it is set, amazing how much idle changes with more advance

not as cold blooded

still using electronic ignition with advance only diaphram, no retard / advance units could be found

it's 99% better, but have noticed loss of top end performance above 5k

as I was saying, not fuel filters or pump
