How do I apply the sealant on the plate? Do I let it dry to tacky before install it? Do I need to torque the 6 screws/hex botls?

get all surfaces really clean.

 

i ussually let it set about 10 minutes.

 

No torque wrench required for the bolts, just good and snug.

I use brake clean. Let is set. Pay attention to the bottom where oil and oil& brake clean like to run out.

 

I just use ultra-grey - gotta be way cheaper than the dealer stuff and it works well.

 

I make a very small ribbon on the groove of the plate, attach plate to engine, get all screws started a bit, then come back and snug them all.

 

I'm always leary of using too much sealant for this. You'll be able to see it squish out even if you use the smallest bead that you can squeeze out of the tube.

+1..I use brakekleen....make sure its nice and clean...than apply somewhat generously...

So long as that Subaru sealant was the recommended one to be used on engine oil/air/gas fittings, Never use RTV. It's fumes will end up in the exhaust ( here via the PCV system ) and poison and ruin the Oxygen sensor. In fact it there may be enough fumes to ruin 2 or 3 sensors before they are all dissipated.

 

So as above go with an anaerobic sealant. I use Loctite 515 everywhere I used to use RTV back in the 80's/90's.

If it's one of the new style steel separator plates, you need to rough up the sealing edge. The new ones are awful! Use some steel wool, then clean it well. Otherwise, the sealant will literally not stick to it very well.

 

Permatex UltraGray 599 IS anaerobic RTV and fume free. You can spend more for the newer stuff if you like, but honestly...IMHO it's no better than the 599.
