O K guys/gals what year manual trannys will fit our beloved 1st gen legacys, mines really tired at 339000 and I need options, I searched 10 pages and really didn't find a fer sure answer, oh yea found a 97 leg with 139000 at the j/y so hurry and tell me to to go get it:banana:, I know the rearend ratio has to match the tranny ratio but thats all I know,...... well not all:-\, Thanks people.............G!

any 90s 5 speed will work but as mentioned, you need to match the diff ratio. in the early years the final drive ratio jumped around a bit. even in the same year, turbo may be different than NA.

 

did you search "trannychart" ?

 

i don't know if it goes back to 90 but it lists all the manuals with gear ratios, us and japan.

some late models (96+ like GT's for instance) will have hydraulic clutch instead of cable clutch like yours has.

 

i believe they could be interchanged, but haven't heard of anyone actually doing it yet. i contemplated and have the parts, including both style trans, but never got around to it.
